Coleman Yoakum
Micah 6 Community

After graduating in 2011, we wanted to live where good neighbors were needed most. Coleman first spent time in Detroit learning from local community organizations. In 2012, new opportunities led us to Pontiac, where we bought and moved into a home on Newberry Street.

We spent our first year listening—asking neighbors what was working, what wasn’t, and what challenges they faced. We learned about limited access to healthy food, homelessness in vacant houses, and a lack of activities for kids outside of school.

In response, we began growing community gardens, spending time with neighborhood kids, and keeping an open door for homeless neighbors to shower and cook. Our team has evolved over time, but through every change we’ve remained committed to loving our neighbors well—and we’re seeing that love help strengthen the community.
