Rochester Rotary Club RotoScoop
Report on the September 2, 2025 Meeting

Menu for September 9: 🎉Get ready to PARRRTY!🌮 Taco Tuesday, Mexican Street Corn Casserole, cinnamon churros, and chocolate ganache.
ATTENDANCE
We had 34 Rotarians in the house, but no guests. Come on, people—bring a visitor or, better yet, a potential new member. Rotary is too good not to share!

INVOCATION
Juliane Morian set the tone with today’s thoughtful invocation.

FIFTEENTH HANDSHAKE
Greeter Stu Siegner pulled Shirley Gofrank’s name from the hat, making her the fine-free champ of the week. Ever the classy lady, Shirley didn’t even try to test the sheriff’s patience with her free pass.

WHO AM I? (Read further in this issue to find the answers)
  • I joined Rotary to foster a better community connection and learn about the community's needs. My favorite Rotary memories are watching the community enjoy the wine tasting. I worked at Madison Square Garden.
  • I joined Rotary to find an organization that serves the community. My favorite Rotary memories are the closest to the pin game on the golf course. I was an all-state football player.

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK
Annette Werner is on a roll—holding the trophy for the THIRD week straight! Are the rest of us just not worthy? Maybe. But since she keeps stuffing that trophy with $5 bills, we’ll happily let her keep it.

BIRTHDAYS AND CLUB ANNIVERSARIES

No birthdays this week, but we do have two milestone anniversaries:

  • John Gaber—the “smartest guy in the room”—celebrates 27 years in Rochester Rotary.
  • Kyle Johnson—the “young pup” by comparison—celebrates 9 years.

HAPPY BUCKS
  • Tami Salisbury was over the moon about last week's meatballs. Keep them coming, please!

  • Tom Neveau also was over the moon that the football season is finally back.

  • Stuart Siegner is gearing up for a second? third? European honeymoon with his wife.

  • Paul Licker nearly ruined his marriage mid-flight by losing the stem of a treasured watch, which was a gift from his wife. Luckily, jeweler Paul Haig saved the day—and the marriage.

  • Joyce and Karen Joyce are off tomorrow on an Iceland and Scandinavia adventure.

  • Tim Duncan was surrounded by so much joy at his table, he just had to share it.

  • Can you believe that Ron Lichtle is looking forward to tomorrow, when he will finally be able to undergo some much-needed surgery.

  • Christine Hage squeezed in a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in the Pittsburgh area and says you should all plan to go next year—roof repairs will be finished by then.

  • Big congratulations to Paul Licker on receiving his very first Paul Harris Fellowship! 🎉 In just 11 months as a Rochester Rotarian, Paul has shared his time, talents, and treasures generously with the club. When presenting the award, Jay Eastman shared a colorful story about Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, who once rolled a bowling ball down a street and hit a cow. (Yes, really!) That antic got him kicked out of college, but he later went on to law school and changed the world with Rotary. Our Paul hasn’t rolled bowling balls or hit cows—but he is now a proud Paul Harris Fellow!
  • Buddy’s Pizza Fundraiser – Tuesday, September 9 - Who doesn’t love pizza with a purpose? 🍕 Next Tuesday, September 9, from 11 AM to 9 PM, we’ll be at Buddy’s Pizza in Auburn Hills for a quick and tasty fundraiser. Twenty percent of your bill goes directly to Rochester Rotary—easy as pie (well… pizza pie)! Come hungry, bring your family, invite your friends, and let’s turn lunch and dinner into dollars for our charities. Can’t stay? No problem—takeout counts, too! They will also give us credit for DoorDash orders.  Just don’t forget to use the promo code Giveback Rochester Rotary when ordering in person or online. Please RSVP by September 6 at: http://tinyurl.com/3sehp7et. Let’s pack the place and raise some dough—for Rotary and for Buddy’s crust!
  • Remembering Rotarian Lars Nordberg - It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Lars Nordberg, who died in an auto accident this weekend. Lars worked many years with Whims Insurance Agency and was a valued member of our Rotary family. Visitation details will be shared via email as soon as they are available. Please keep Lars and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.
  • Membership Invitations - Thanks to Carol Franciosi, we now have printed invitations to help introduce Rochester Rotary to potential members. Each member in attendance received one, so now it’s time for “each one, reach one.” A simple invite can open the door for someone new to discover the joy of Rotary. Who will you hand yours to?
  • Member Update - Please keep Bob Lytle in your thoughts. Bob took a fall last week and had to undergo hip replacement surgery—again. We wish him a smooth recovery and look forward to seeing his smile back at Rotary soon.
  • Who Am I? Yolanda Udell once worked at Madison Square Garden, and Roger Roller was an All-State football player.

SONG LEADER
With Bob Lytle laid up, Jerry Carvey took over the song leader duties. He was caught up in all the moon talk and led us in singing By the Light of the Silvery Moon and  Harvest Moon.

👮SHERIFF'S REPORT - SASS & SNARK EDITION
👍 Sheriff Review - Tom Neveau said last week’s sheriff was “good.” Not great, not terrible, just… good. (Talk about damning with faint praise.)

🎵 Song Length Matters - Jerry sent good wishes to Bob Lytle and redeemed himself by picking short songs. (Rotarians everywhere rejoiced—less singing, more eating.)

👗 Carol in Pink! - Carol Franciosi, usually draped in Rotary blue, showed up in fabulous pink frills. (Take that, fashion critics—today, she’s serving Barbiecore.)

⚪ White After Labor Day? Bold Choice - Ron Lichtle wore white after Labor Day. Sheriff Blair fined him on sight. (Sorry, Ron—rules are rules. Next time, try plaid.)

📱 QR Code Fail - Linda Eastman gave a masterclass on QR codes. Then we discovered they don’t work on Phil Lowman’s flip phone. (Phil, welcome to 2004—time to upgrade.)

💵 Harris Story → Harris Fines - Jay Eastman shared a great Paul Harris story. Sheriff Dave said thanks… then fined every Paul Harris Fellow. (That’s 60% of the club. He basically paid for lunch.)

📜 This Week in History

  • 1882: First Labor Day celebrated in NYC. (And we’ve been barbecuing ever since.)

  • 1789: U.S. Treasury Department founded. (Still trying to figure out the national debt.)

  • 1850: California became a state. (Should we evict them by 2050? Discuss.)

🎃 Pumpkin Spice Crackdown - The Sheriff hates pumpkin spice with a fiery passion. PSL lovers got slapped with fines. (Apparently, autumn joy is now a punishable offense.)

📚 Back-to-School Blues - Parents sending kids back = fined. People who haven’t seen a classroom in 10+ years = also fined. (Basically, if you’ve ever heard of school, you owe money.)

Thanks to Sheriff Blair's creative enforcement, we raised an additional $176  for our scholarship program! Remember, these “fines” are all in good fun and serve a great purpose: building camaraderie and raising funds for our charitable efforts, especially scholarships. Let’s continue living out the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self," with enthusiasm, punctuality, and a healthy dose of Rochester pride and humor!

SPEAKER  - Women Empowerment Circle Group

Bree Clawson founded the Women Empowerment Circle Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women on their path to mental wellness. The group’s mission is to provide accessible self-care tools while fostering a community where women can connect, heal, and grow.

The organization offers a variety of programs:

  • Wellness Meetups – Activities such as sound relaxation sessions, meditation, and brunch gatherings are designed to reduce stress and promote self-awareness.

  • Community Outreach – Service opportunities, collaboration with local organizations, and events that build stronger connections between women and community leaders.

  • Holiday Wellness Boxes – Curated packages of self-care items distributed during the holiday season to encourage relaxation, mindfulness, and joy.

A key strength of the Women Empowerment Circle Group is its focus on creating safe and engaging spaces where women can share their experiences and support one another. Events are designed to be both meaningful and enjoyable, encouraging active participation and a sense of belonging.

As a nonprofit, the organization also works to build partnerships that expand its reach and provide resources to sustain its mission of empowerment and healing.
