Rochester Rotary Club RotoScoop
January 28th, 2020

President Wayne Hodges opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, then we sang America the Beautiful, and recited the modified Four Way Test.  The invocation was given by Linda Eastman, asking that each of us strive to serve, and to allow peace to come over ourselves, our country, and our world.  Lunch was served.

ATTENDANCE

There were 50 Rotarians present, and five guests:  Ariel Radtke guest of Sharon Rienke, Lars Nordberg guest of Ron Lichtle, Yoland Udell guest of Kyle Johnson, William Waggoner guest of Jerry, and Jason Brainer guest of Wayne.  We also had the OU Rotaract club in attendance for a bake sale.

15th HANDSHAKE
Tom Neveau  announced to the club that Ted Roumell earned the 15th handshake this week, enjoy the week without fines Ted!

HAPPY BUCKS
Paul Haig was happy about the Rotarian of the Week award, he is fixing it up and wanted to give it to David Blair, maybe he can stop by to pick up a special gift for a Valentine in his life.
Bob Lytle was very excited about his hair cut, he just had it done at his new tenants place located on the lower level of his building at 3rd and Main.  He was also excited about the cover of his new book.
Bryan Barnett was happy about Rotary, all the support for his sister who was sick in China.
Jay Eastman announced that on February 5th, the secretary general of Rotary will be in Ann Arbor.  Anyone interested, please see him for more details.
Tom Neveau was happy, but anxious about:  the Rotary youth exchange kids had an event this past weekend, but we only had five kids that will be utilizing this program within our district.

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK
Paul Haig gave the award (absent the trophy which is in his shop being refurbed) to David Blair.  Congrats David!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tom Neveau came up to the podium to give out a check to Humble Design.  Lisa, the director of Humble Design in Pontiac, was on hand to accept the check.  She then discussed what Humble Design does, furnishing houses to people in need after they purchase a home.  Excellent cause, she was very thankful.
Tim Crawford then gave us an update on the Master's Raffle.  Make sure you pick up tickets, and sell them (only 300 tickets will be sold).  Great trip, and an excellent fund raiser for the club.  March 24th is the day we pick the winner...
Brandon from the OU Rotaract club made a brief announcement about the bake sale in the back, everything is free today as someone bought the table.  Enjoy the sweets!
Vito Pampalona then spoke about the Rochester School District, the students have named the Yellow Ribbon Fund as their named beneficiary to receive $75k (expected).
Wayne then spoke briefly about space travel, and his thoughts about being an astronaut when he was younger.  He then spoke about our losses in the space program, most of which happened in the month of January.  In particular, he spoke about a personal friend of his that took responsibility for one of those disasters.  Tough to think about, but remember everyone involved, not just those that lost their lives.  They have all made our space program possible, and we thank them.

BIRTHDAYS AND CLUB ANNIVERSARIES
No birthdays today, but three club anniversaries:  Ernie Schaeffer on the 26th of January, twenty two years.  Jerry Murphy joined on the 1st of February, nine years.  Roger Byrd joined on the 29th of January, forty six years.

SONGS
Jerry Carvey then led us in two songs, Wedding Bells are Breaking up that Old Gang of Mine and the Whiffenpoof Song.  Thanks Jerry, great choices!

SHERIFF'S REPORT
David Blair then came to the podium and proceeded to extract $326 from our wallets for our charities.  Everything from new members, Phil Lowman, Vito's fashion choices, the great game of golf, pen stealing, home improvement, and Yurt camping.  Great job David!

PROGRAM
David Eardley then introduced our speaker of the day, Nicholas Kristock.  Nicholas spoke about his start up, Fleece and Thank You.  His company makes blankets for kids entering a hospital setting for an overnight (plus) stay.  Attached to that blanket is a video from the blanket maker giving a positive message for the child, allowing the recipient to send a video back.  Very powerful presentation, and a phenomenal company.  Thank you for speaking Nick!
