Wayne H shared about the recently concluded PETS Conference.  He noted that many clubs include a fifth question:  Will it be fun for everyone involved?  He believes we should add it to our beginning.  He spoke of the difference between being a Rotarian and being a member of a Rotary Club.  He spoke of the joy of celebrating the near eradication of polio and the key role that Rotary has played in this.  He shared about Rotary's commitment to make the world a better place.  Rotary has been key in networking and responding to natural disasters throughout the world, often being the first on the ground to coordinate relief efforts.  He shared his desire to do three things as president: 1) create a calendar with input from everyone, 2) develop the budget with input from everyone, and 3) invite each club member to be a Rotarian and experience joy of service above self.

Chief Schettenhelm will be formally recognized in May in Grand Rapids at the Annual State POAM Convention. He was nominated by the men and women of all ranks from the Rochester Police Department. This nomination was then voted on by the POAM Executive Board. Congratulations to your 2018 Police Officers Association of Michigan Chief of the Year!

PROGRAM
Ron Lichtle introduced our speaker today, James Schwarz, Superintendent of the Avondale School District.  He has served 5 years in this role.  The Avondale district is comprised of 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 high school, and 1 alternative school.  The district partners with RCS in a number of ways.  The district began a strategic plan in the 2015/2016 school year, and it has guided them very well.  The district is committed to Project Based Learning, which is available at all grade levels and focuses on applying what the students are learning.  This gives them experiences that translate well in the workplace.  Over 50 teachers have been trained in Project Based Learning (almost 25% of the teachers).  They have had success implementing the late state/early release schedule.  There is much collaboration among students in the school system.  At Avondale Academy, the alternative school, they use a FLEX Friday program which allows students to work together during morning classes and provides for collaboration opportunities for teachers during the afternoon.  Project Lead the Way has been a success in introducing engineering classes in middle school.  These classes are mandatory as a way to include both male and female students.  There is a program where high school students may receive a Cybersecurity certificate, which would allow them to find good paying jobs immediately following graduation.  He spoke of how they have successfully transitioned their media center to a Maker Space model, which highlights critical thinking.  He spoke of their commitment to keeping the curriculum up to date to offer the best opportunities for all their students.  There is a partnership with MEEMIC to help students receive training in jobs for the insurance industry.  They are involved with an Early College Program, where students can receive up to 60 college credits, while still in high school.  He also shared how students are required to take 2 online classes as part of gaining learning experiences for the real world.  He then took time for a few questions.  Thank you, James for a great presentation today!

President Rodney adjourned the meeting at 1:35 p.m.
