ROCHESTER ROTARY CHARITIES VOTE
Tom Neveau opened the Rochester Rotary Charities meeting and announced that a vote was needed to approve a $5,000 grant from the charities for the Guatemala Water Project.  Jay Eastman provided further information about the project which will provide water and sanitation for 34 homes and the school at Nuevo Eden, which is near the clinic in Guatemala.  The total for the grant is $113,000 for this project and is support by two districts, 6380 and 6000, as well as many Rotary Clubs, and individuals.  The Charities Board had approved this request and was recommending it for approval by all the members.  The motion passed unanimously.  Tom then closed the Rochester Rotary Charities meeting.

SONGS
Subbing for Bob Lytle, Eric Whipple led us singing two holiday favorites:  Home for the Holidays and Santa Claus is Coming to Town (including Steve Cooper on bells).  Well done, Rotarians, and thank you, Eric!

SHERIFF

PROGRAM
Ron Lichtle introduced today's speaker, Garry Gilbert, Director of the Journalism Program at Oakland University, who presentation was titled, "Truth Decay."  He spoke of the challenges to news coverage as the line between opinion and fact has blurred in recent years.  As Woodward and Bernstein had once stated, the goal of journalism is to discover the "best available version of the truth."  He spoke of how profit-driven news has led many news organizations to craft stories that will be appealing to their consumers.  He referred to Edward R. Murrow's statement: "A lie can go around the world while the truth is still putting its pants on."  He recommended four questions when assessing the veracity of the news story:
Has it been verified?
Is it journalism of assertion?
Is it journalism of affirmation?
Is it interest group journalism?
He stated that multiple sources are always keys.  One source stories can easily be dubious.
As he concluded his presentation, he took time for questions.
Thank you, Garry, for an informative presentation!
President Rodney reported that we had collected $1,629 for the staff at Rivercrest, as our appreciation for their tremendous service each and every week.

He reminded us that our next meeting would be:
Tuesday, January 8, 2019

Happy Holidays everyone!

President Rodney closed the meeting at 1:33 p.m.

Anyone displeased about this summary, does them thereafter,

David Eardley
