Rochester Rotary Club RotoScoop November 27, 2018

The meeting was opened by President Rodney Hulbert who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and then we all sang "This is My Country."  The invocation was given by David Eardley.  61 out of 108 members and no guests were present for today's meeting.  Our pianist, Paula d'Ambrosio played holiday music as we enjoyed our lunch and table conversation.

GUESTS

Jeff Whitbey encouraged us to invite friends and coworkers to an upcoming club meeting.  He also encouraged us to visit other clubs when we're out of the town.

HAPPY BUCKS
Phil L -- literally unspeakable joy (no words) for OSU's thrashing of U-M
Mary Grace C -- happy to see Rodney back

15th HANDSHAKE
Kyle Johnson was this week's 15th handshake and was thus granted immunity from all fines... should there be any.  Congrats, Kyle!

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK

The bejeweled trophy continues under the care of Buck Crossley for another week, who was unable to locate this week's planned recipient, who we believe slipped out early from the meeting.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mary Grace announced that there is need for drivers tomorrow to help deliver many of the 1,858 poinsettias that have been ordered.  Please contact Jo Allen, if you're able to be a driver.  Poinsettias not being delivered may be picked up on Thursday at Bordine's.

Kyle J brought the happy totals for this year's Bell Ringing at Lagniappe:  3rd place: $250.71 Rochester Mills Brewery, 2nd place: $290.21 Chemical Bank, and 1st place: $394.62 Home Bakery.  The total collected was $1,742.18.  Thank you Bell Ringers, especially Steve Cooper's corner which raised more than Phil Lowman's corner!

Linda E shared that additional bakers are still being sought for this year's Cookie Walk.  Please take the publicity with you and share it with your friends and neighbors.

Wayne H shared that $535 was collected at last week's bake sale for the Avondale Interact team.  They were overjoyed.  To date, $2,500 have been raised through bake sales at our club.  Wayne thanked everyone for their generosity and support of our Interact and Rotaract clubs.

The 2018 Christmas Parade will be Sunday, December 2, and Rotary will have a float and share it with the Rochester Area Neighborhood House!  Walkers are needed to help celebrate Rotary during the 1 1/2 - 2 mile parade route.  Meet at Stoney Creek High School by 12:30 p.m.  See you there!

The 2018 Cookie Walk will be Saturday, December 15, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., in the OPC Auditorium.  Bakers are needed to help fill our tables with delicious cookies for the holidays.  Please see Linda Eastman for more info.

The Rotary Christmas Party will be on Thursday, December 20, at Great Oaks Country Club, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.  Tickets will be $60/person for regular members and $30/ticket for younger members.  Mark your calendars!

REMINDER:  The Masters Raffle will be back in 2019.  300 tickets will be available at $100/ticket.  Start talking it up with your golfing friends.  Tickets make great stocking stuffers!

SONGS
Following last week's disappointing performance, Bob Lytle led us all into a stirring comeback of musical excellence with the following songs:  Home for the Holidays and Silver Bells.  Well done and thank you, Bob!

SHERIFF
Today's Sheriff, Rochester Chief of Police Steve Schettenhelm was on a roll from the beginning.  Besides highlighting a Cooper/Lowman grudgematch during next year's Lagniappe, he offered key commentary on Jeff's invitation to attend other clubs (where people might like us and they would keep us), to the seating location of announcement givers, to the good news of the Lions not losing on Sunday, to Gordie Howe trivia, and a reminder that this week is Drowsy Driver Awareness Week.  If you see a Rotarian sleeping in their car, please wake them up.  $248 in fines for Rotary Scholarships, bringing the YTD total to around $5,100 toward our $11,000 goal.  PLEASE NOTE: fines are now $5.  Thank you everyone!

PROGRAM
Ron DiLiddo introduced Tim Reese, a retired Colonel with the US Army.  He spoke about the Veterans Day holiday and its history.  He is part of the committee that helped build the Veterans Tribute in Oakland Township (N. Adams Rd. and Silver Bell Rd.).  He noted that this year was the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, which formally ended World War I.  Initially, it was called Remembrance Day to honor World War I veterans, and in 1954, President Eisenhower renamed it Veterans Day to recognize veterans from all wars.  He shared that 4 million men from the US served in WWI, with 2 million serving as part of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), commanded by General Pershing (which included both Army and Marines under his command).  350,000 African Americans served in WWI and over 1,500 women served as part of the medical corps.  WWI witnessed significant change in the nature of combat including the use of airplanes, tanks, and unrestricted submarine warfare (sinking of military and civilian ships).  Currently the only WWI monument in Washington, DC, is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but there is a WWI monument being planned.  He also spoke of Michigan's participation in the war both in terms of men and resources dedicated to the war effort.  He also spoke about the Veterans Tribute of Oakland Township, which was formed in 2016 has received lots of support to make the tribute possible.  He closed by talking about the US Army, and that the Army is currently present in 120 of the 190 nations across the globe.  He stated how the percentage of veterans in each generation is reducing, especially it has been a volunteer force since 1973.  He concluded his program by taking several questions.  Thank you, Tim, for your service to our country and for your program today!

Wayne reminded everyone about Barbara Oakley being next week's speaker... invite your friends to attend!

President Rodney closed the meeting at 1:28 p.m.
